Just think of the amount of money you spend on several CT scans, tests, etc and get no where with - then you will realize it is well WORTH IT to actually get healthy and to the root of the problem.
Functional Medicine is the way to go if you are serious about getting to the root of your physical issues and I cannot recommend a better team than The UltraWellness Center Team!
I discovered the concept of Functional Medicine and The UltraWellness Center during my quest for answers after being debilitated for almost a year with no clear diagnosis. It was the best decision and a game changer for me that set me on a path to discovery, recovery, and vitality.
Thank you especially to Dr. Todd Lepine, who has been so supportive in my healing process! He's a fabulous Doctor.
To conclude, yes, visiting UWC cost me an unconscionable amount of money, but, much worse, it added to my overall fear and distress by labeling and pathologizing symptoms with no real basis. Talking about a "compromised gut" is profoundly damaging at a psychological level, particularly when no evidence for the "diagnosis" can be found (I talk about psychology because I eventually got relief from some of these symptoms taking psychoactive drugs prescribed by a psychiatrist). Finally, to UWC's great shame, Dr. Boham actually gave me objectively incorrect medical advice, diagnosing hemochromatosis and telling me to give blood every month to control my iron levels. My aunt happens to be a hematologist, so I took the liberty of sharing my blood work with her. Her conclusion: your iron values are fine, there is zero evidence of hemochromatosis, and it is irresponsible for anyone to suggest you give blood. Yikes. A lot of money to get some vague conjecture and an erroneous diagnosis.
More troubling, however, is that these doctors are not specially trained medical detectives, as all their publicity materials suggest, but basically a loose assortment of pretty average family practice doctors. They happen to have embraced what they call "functional medicine," which certainly entails a lot of testing, but, as one healthcare professional commented to me after the fact, "They gather a lot of data, but don't really seem to know what to do with it"--that, and a lot of the tests they order are not accepted anywhere else as clinically meaningful. For example, while reviewing their results, a top GI doctor at MGH told me their "zonulin test," which supposedly assesses "leaky gut," actually assesses nothing, because outside of certain clinical trials there IS no test for leaky gut. She should know: she works alongside Alessio Fasano, who discovered zonulin.
Is it more expensive than taking a prescription drug - sure! But well worth the money if you have an impossible problem that regular doctors can't even begin to figure out. Unfortunately, functional medicine is not covered under insurance so these practices have to charge more. I have been to several natural doctors in the past and the cost is not abnormal.
I notice a lot of people complain about the price. This criticism is 100% justified--UWC is a racket, particularly when you consider that they direct you to their own online supplements store when they prescribe supplements (for ethical reasons, a doctor should never profit from prescribing a given supplement OR medication).
Dr. Hyman and his entire staff are caring, positive, and very thorough. They have inspired, encouraged, and diligently cared for me throughout my long and sometimes difficult road to healing.
The Ultrawellness Center Doctors are thorough and knowledgeable. I recommend the Clinic to anyone who wants to be healed from the inside out.
There is a tremendous difference between being "treated" for a medical condition and being "empowered" to overcome it. I am forever grateful for my doctor and team that have empowered me throughout each step of the journey.
I have had nothing but good experiences with the Ultra Wellness Center. Dr. LePine and his staff have been willing to tackle my difficult health issues and I have increasingly improved under their care. Lisa, the nutritionist is a super star....she has changed my life with her approach and the resources she has provided.
I'm forever grateful to Dr. Mark Hyman for his outstanding and excellent pioneer work in Functional Medicine. He has changed the course of medicine by looking for and treating the root cause of disease instead of addressing symptoms. He has changed the trajectory of my son's life who is recovering from Autism. We are so grateful we found Dr. Hyman and Dr. Elizabeth Boham at the UltraWellness Center! Dr. Boham treats my son; she is so very caring and brilliant in testing and treating my son who is a completely different young man 9 years later. We have seen that when you heal the body, you heal the brain. It is a gift beyond comparison to see your child heal, grow and begin to thrive! I cannot even imagine where my son would be today if we had not found Dr. Hyman and Dr. Boham.
My experience with the Ultrawellness Center has been very positive. The Staff is always readily available, via telephone or email.
